Should We All Be Carrying Business Cards? Yes!
September 25, 2025
Last Wednesday my husband and I saw Viagra Boys at the Palace Theater in St. Paul. It was very fun, and I enjoyed it a lot. But I'm not here to review the show. I'm here to present an exciting new technology in friend-making!
Before the show, several people approached my husband and me to chat. (To clarify, they mostly approached my husband, who was decked out in people-attracting band patches.) All of them seemed like cool potential friends, but then they disappeared into the jostle and were lost forever.
A few days later my husband had an idea: business cards, but for social uses. Put your name and personal number or email on there. Maybe add your social media. Links to wherever. A QR code if you're fancy. Then hand out your cards to people who seem cool.
As a socially awkward person who lives in a state full of mild-mannered, reserved people, I love this idea. I think it would be a great way to mitigate the awkwardness of exchanging contact details with a new person.
Like, maybe it's just the Minnesotan in me, but I find it uncomfy to take that step with people. I think there are probably a lot of people who have trouble with this. I mean, isn't this at least part of why so many adults struggle to make friends once done with school?
But with a business card (unaffiliated with actual business, please), you can just be like "You seem cool, let's be friends" and hand it over. Then, they have everything they need to look you up and contact you if they think you're a good friendship match.
I think there's a real merit in being able to easily invite people to be your friend. Giving them a card would also be a solid call to action after the initial meeting passes: connect with me!
Would it be weird? I don't know. But maybe I'll try it? I'm writing this post to invite you to try this out as well. The personal business card movement starts now! (Maybe we can find a different name for it, though.)
